Well as a bit of an update to my previous post on the Nintendo DS I have recently been able to obtain some firm figures on the state of sales for Nintendo and Sony in their portable console 'war'. Keeping in mind that these figures precede the release of the DS Lite, Nintendo's upgraded and 'sexier' looking model of the DS, it seems that the innovation of the DS is winning the race (though the PSP did release later then the DS it should be noted):

Software charts are also consistently showing how the broad market appeal of the DS is breaking new ground in sales:

The future is thus looking brighter for a long jilted Nintendo fan such as myself. The Christmas 2006 release of Nintendo's next gaming console, "the Wii" (despite the err "interesting name") also has the potential to re-invigorate Nintendo's fortunes in the home console space.
